As we (CTU) prepare for a strike tomorrow, many students of all ages have asked me very direct questions about what this means for them and why it is happening. As an educator, I find that books are a great way to draw parallels between situations in text and in our real lives. Here are some titles you might use to discuss the CTU strike: Click, Clack, Moo/Ready-to-Read: Cows That Type (A Click Clack Book) Side by Side/Lado a Lado: The Story of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez/La Historia de Dolores Huerta y Cesar Chavez Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop: The Sanitation Strike of 1968 Brave Girl by Michelle Markel and Melissa Sweet Kids on Strike! by Susan Campbell Bartoletti Which Side Are You On? The Story of a Song by George Ella Lyon and Christopher Cardinale Si, Se Puede!/Yes, We Can! Janitor Strike In L.A. by Diana Cohn and Francisco Delgado* Joelito’s Big Decision/La gran decisión de Joelito by Ann Berlak and Daniel Camacho On Our Way to Oyster Bay: Mother Jones and Her March for Children’s Rights by Monica Kulling and Felicita Sala

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. Guided by the goals, it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone. https://www.globalgoals.org/
This year, we will examine texts throught the lense of the global goals. In anticipation of Monday's holiday, I reflected on (1) what I learned growing up about Columbus, and (2) the truths I hope students will learn about this holiday and man to inform their own opinions. Here are some resources:
