A pourquoi story ("pourquoi" means "why" in French), also known as an origin story, pourquoi tale or an etiological tale, is a fictional narrative that explains why something is the way it is, for example why a snake has no legs, or why a tiger has stripes. Many legends and folk tales are pourquoi stories.
This week, we are reading and writing Porquoi Folk Tales. Students begin by reading The Little Brown Jay, A Tale from India. We then use a graphic organizer to dissect the elements of a Porquoi Story. We read two further examples of Porquois to ensure we have properly outlined the criteria/elements from the exemplar texts. Finally, students will pick an animal and a characteristic of that animal and create their own Porquoi explaining a "why" or "how" about a characteristic of the animal.
