Some student will play picture Bingo with the words and accompanying images, others will write and share times they felt different emotions, specifically as it relates to being new to a school and making a welcoming environment to others when they arrive, and others will receive flashcards with the words in their Native Language to use as a reference during class activities. Please review words to reinforce their meanings and use it as a conversation starter about their school day. "When did you feel most FOCUSED/HAPPY?PEACEFUL today? Why?" instead of "How was your day?" Expect a blue paper coming home to complete with your child. Here is the parent explanation, and 5 questions on the back for you to fill out with your child. Together, we are discussing our feelings when we began school at Ray for the first time, how to be welcoming to others when they arrive to Ray for the first time, and the importance of our names as part of our identity. Please complete this worksheet attached with your child and return it to school by Monday, October 1, 2018. Your discussions will make an important and meaningful connection to our classwork and will be used in part to make the We Are Ray book, highlighting each student. All About My Name 1. The session poses ethical questions we should ask ourselves when making time and space for students and their trauma. From Syria to the South Side Wed, February 27, 2019 | 4:30–6:30 pm | Logan Center and Oriental Institute Museum (Transportation provided between sites) Join visual artist Karthik Pandian and choreographer Andros Zins-Browne in an exploration of the Logan Center exhibition, Atlas Unlimited. Participants will visit the exhibition and then take part in an interactive workshop at the Oriental Institute Museum that draws connections between the exhibition’s focus on the itinerant realities of migration and the museum’s collection of ancient Near Eastern artifacts. Yesterday, at the 57th Street Children's Book Fair, I had the pleasure of meeting Christina Matula, the author of The Shadow in the Moon. She donated a signed copy of the book to Ray ESL program. My Elementary Education Master’s degree is from Northern Illinois University and I am a certified ESL teacher, grades K through 8. I moved to the United States from Ecuador as a child and am personally aware and prepared for the challenges that large transitions can have on students academically.
